Don’t hire a web designer without asking these
Finding the right person to build your website can feel overwhelming. Everyone sounds good on paper. These five questions will help you separate experience from empty promises.
1. Can I see examples of your work?
A good designer will have a portfolio they’re happy to share. Look for variety - if every site follows the same template, you’re probably paying for a theme with your logo swapped in. Nothing wrong with templates, but be clear on what you’re getting.
2. Do you handle hosting and maintenance?
Some designers build the site, hand over the files, and that’s it. Others offer ongoing support, updates, and hosting. Neither is wrong, but know which you’re getting before you start. A website isn’t a one-and-done project - it needs looking after.
3. Will my site work on mobile?
This should be a given in 2026, but it’s worth confirming explicitly. A responsive design isn’t optional - it’s essential. And “responsive” doesn’t just mean it shrinks down. It means the experience is actually good on a phone.
4. What’s actually included in the price?
Get a breakdown. Design, development, content, SEO setup, number of revisions - know what’s covered so there are no surprises halfway through. We’ve heard too many stories of clients being charged extra for basic things they assumed were included.
5. What happens after launch?
Will they hand over the keys and disappear? Or will they be around for support, updates, and improvements? A good designer will at least point you in the right direction for ongoing care, even if they don’t offer it themselves.
